Organization of studies
There are several possibilities to learn acting in Belgium , fewer to learn staging and even less giving access to both : staging as a complement to a thorough training in acting. Offering this package is a specificity of the IAD. The Drama specialisation is built on a four or five-year study programme. Each year comprises 60 ECTS of learning which split into theoretical courses, technical courses and practicals, creative workshops and artistic projects, dissertation and placement.
First cycle : The transition bachelor's degree
The first cycle in drama consists of 3 years of study and leads to a transition Bachelor's Degree. Each year comprises 60 learning ECTS which are split into theoretical courses , technical courses and practicals and creative workshops and artistic projects.
As of the first year, the classes adopt a mode of operation somewhat similar to that of a theatre company. This method totally transforms the teacher-student relationship as well as the relationship between the students. Each class works between 12 and 18 hours a week with a drama teacher on a specific project. This creates an atmosphere of solidarity and complicity which improves the quality of the collaborative project. A must for an actor!
The output of these workshops is the subject of public showings as of the end of the third year.

Second cycle : the Master's degree
At the end of the three years of the transition bachelor's degree, students must choose their orientation. The Master programme comprises 120 ECTS. The Communauté française of Belgium imposes to the High Artistic Schools to allow the student, who introduces a demande in that way, to follow a programme that comprises only 60 ECTS. This Master of 60 ECTS corresponds to a "light" Master.
The vocation of the IAD Drama Department is mainly to train performers, first of all actors but also stage directors, compères, in other words theatre professionals who are much more than just « role players » whose role is limited to specific « employments ».
For this purpose, the theoretical courses are theatre-oriented; they aim to open the student's mind to culture and to arouse his/her curiosity and sensibility.
Furthermore, the training programme includes learning a whole range of vocal, motional, bodily expression techniques which are essential for actors, not to mention the technical aspects such as the unit management, the lighting, ... the dubbing,...
The participation in the practicals of the Directing specialisation and of the short type specialisations is another important part of the academic programme. The actors will have the opportunity to learn to play in front of microphones and cameras.
The variety and richness of the training programme and the investment it requires from everyone make it difficult to pursue theatre activities outside the IAD during the studies. However, a practical work placement is organized during the fourth or fifth year in agreement with the drama department coordinators.
